The EMPOWER Mentoring Program is assessed on an annual basis with a year-end workshop with all of the cohort members to discuss what worked and what challenges were faced. Additionally, throughout the year, program administrators can monitor activity logs of the mentor/mentee pairs.
An extensive assessment has been completed at the 5-year and the 10-year mark by an external evaluator. A mixed methods approach was used with both qualitative and quantitative data gathered. Semi-structured focus groups were conducted separately with mentors and mentees. A survey of Likert-scale questions and open-ended items was also distributed.
Qualitative data for the evaluation of EMPOWER Program included focus groups and open-ended survey responses. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data was conducted utilizing the constant comparative method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Lincoln & Guba, 1985). Quantitative data included participants’ responses to the surveys. Descriptive statistics, including means, frequencies, and standards deviations of respondents’ answers were calculated.
